I love this film made by Esther Freeman of Ms Wandas Wardrobe featuring Saffia Minney of Ethical Fashion Brand, People Tree and Veronica Crespi of Rewardrobe.

Birthday Week

Apart from the fact that it marks me getting another year older, I really love birthdays. I don’t have much time to myself most of the time so on my birthday like to indulge myself. This year I have managed to spread it out over a whole week of doing pretty much exactly what I want. I had some lovely pressies including delicious smelling Lush goodies from my sister, a beautiful mirrored jewellery box and a necklace from my neighbours and a vintage book from my friend but mostly I got money which I  have used to treat myself to a few goodies (clothes of course!).

116 Birthday Week

ramirez dress Birthday Week

On Monday, I spent a very wet day wandering around the shops and researching my Vintage and Second Hand Guide to Bath, I did also manage to squeeze in some shopping and got this beautiful scarf from the Black and White Shop for just £10. I also got this amazing printed dress from Monsoon and a Monsoon cardigan from the Oxfam Boutique. I can’t wait until the weather warms up so I can wear the dress perhaps with the scarf for a really printastic outfit!

086 Birthday Week

My actual birthday was really all about eating cake. I ordered up this beauty from Patisserie Valerie, it was delicious- sponge, cream, fruit and white chocolate.  I did manage to fit in 2 hours of excercise classes which hopefully went some way to offsetting some of those calories.

057 Birthday Week

On Thursday, I had a cup of tea and chat with the lovely Noorin Khamisani of Outsider, a fantastic label that is all about classic, wearable and beautiful clothes (that just happen to be ethical too) . I really love her latest collection which features some very lovely dresses, one of which she happens to be wearing in this photo.

0141 Birthday Week

It was yet another horrible and wet day so I resorted to wearing jeans (organic cotton from M&S) and boots (Dream in Green) with my new Antiform top that I got from Mr Style Eyes and the girls. I did give them a little help in deciding what to get me. Well actually I just bought it ,myself from Think Boutique. Antiform is another label which I really love and well worth checking out if you love unusual pieces. They use reclaimed fabrics and mix fashion forward shapes with heritage crafts.

zakee shariff paisley tee 0ec0361e168b Birthday Week

I also got this People Tree top from the Zakee Shariff Collection.

0741 Birthday Week

And this dress by Frank and Faith (another amazing and very afforable brand) from Ethical Superstore which I wore out to dinner with my friends on Friday with leggings and necklace by People Tree, swapped denim jacket and shoes by Simple.

I have also ordered myself a few more goodies in the Ethical Superstore 20% off sale and some Melissa shoes (to keep my feet dry) which I will share once they arrive.

So that is it birthday week is over, back to reality, sensible, healthy eating and a complete shopping ban until at least the autumn, I definitely don’t need any new clothes now.

I hope you have had a lovely weekend, despite the rain!

What to Wear in Spring? An Annie Greenabelle Dress

0391 What to Wear in Spring? An Annie Greenabelle Dress

Yesterday morning I mentioned on twitter how I was a little unsure of what to wear in this weather. We haven’t quite transitioned into full on summer or even spring when I feel confident enough to wear a dress without tights or leggings and yet by mid afternoon the weather has been beautiful to the point where I want to do nothing more than sit in the garden. Some of the suggestions included thin layers and tights or leggings.

I love sleeveless dresses whether it be summer or winter as I feel less restricted in them and when it isn’t quite warm enough to go bare armed or legged I can always throw on a pair of leggings (my favourites at the moment are from People Tree) and a charity shop cardigan.

On Sunday, we had family coming for dinner and I wanted to wear something that looked nice but was also really comfortable. This Annie  Greenabelle dress and these People Tree leggings were perfect. Both are made from Organic cotton which is nice and thick and really soft, lovely to wear.

What do you wear in this inbetweeny spring weather?

If you haven’t yet entered my ethical outfit competition, there is still time to do so. There is over £200 of ethical fashion to be won, it closes on Saturday!

Polka Dots and My Favourite Ethical Fashion Blogs

010 2 Polka Dots and My Favourite Ethical Fashion Blogs

Today’s outfit is something I wore last weekend for a family birthday party. The dress is really old I bought it years ago and stored it in the loft when I put on a bit of weight with my second child. I recently discovered it again. I don’t think polka dots and spots ever go out of fashion or do classic and flattering styles! The cardigan is from a charity shop, red is my favourite colour and I seem to be wearing it with everything at the moment.

I thought I would share with you some of my favourite fashion blogs that also happen to be ethical (in no particular order)!

 A Sense of Sublime
I have fairly recently come across this blog and love the way that Christina inspires with her ethical and sustainable outfits. She gives some great reviews of what is going on in the ethical fashion including everything from celebrity jumbles to fashion shows and also features vintage fashion, delicious vegetarian food and lots more.

Very Nice Threads
I first came across Christine’s posts in the Huffington Post but also really love her personal blog which features some of the best of upcoming ethical brands. Her blog covers some of the main ethical fashion industry events , she also features some fantastic street style.

Fashion Against Idealogy
Natalia’s blog features her amazing eclectic style which I really love. Bright colours, prints and statement accessories, all combined in beautifully photographed outfits.

Ms Wanda’s Wardrobe
Ms Wanda has all sorts of informative and thought provoking posts. If you want to find out about ethical fashion and some of the issues behind it, is a great place to start to looking. The blog is just about to relaunch so keep you eyes outfit for the new layout and some really interesting guest posts.

Oranges and Apples
I have been following Franca practically since I started blogging. I love her colourful outfits and hand knitted accessories. At first you might not realise that she features lots of ethical/ sustainable fashion on her blog, she also tackles all sorts of interesting topics including body image.

Vintage Vix
Vix has an amazing style not only inspired the seventies but featuring many vintage clothes from the seventies which is about as sustainable as it gets. She also mends, makes and upcycles with amazing results. I love that Vix wears exactly what she likes and also has some of the most amazing maxi dresses, she also often makes me really laugh along the way.

Sadies Wardrobe
Sadie is a fellow blogger at Oxfam fashion. I love her style and the way she incorporates charity shop and ethical pieces into her outfits. Her also has such pretty outfit photographs.

Finally, I have a little treat for those of you lucky enough to live in London and go to all the amazing stuff that goes in their (me, jealous?).

This week as an extra bonus, it is all also reduced in the sale. So if you really can’t stick to that new year shopping ban at least you can shop so in a relatively guilt free way.

Tuesday Treats – Ethical Knitwear

Yesterday it was so cold I had to give in and put the heating on. I usually try and last as long as possible by layering as many knits as I can. Mr Style Eyes likes to have a good laugh at me wrapped up in my scruffy old Grandad cardigan and has suggested perhaps I ought to get something a little more stylish. So here are just a few of the most stylish pieces of ethical knitwear that I have spotted recently that also look like they would keep me extra toasty warm.

Book Review – Naked Fashion by Saffia Minney

055 680x1024 Book Review Naked Fashion by Saffia Minney

Safia Minney, the founder of People Tree, is someone who inpsires me hugely. She has proved that it is possible to build a successful business whilst sticking to your values and is a pioneer of ethical fashion, leading the way for others to follow. So naturally, when I heard that she had written a book, Naked Fashion – The New Sustainable Fashion Revolution, I was really keen to order up a copy straight away.

The foreward is written by Lucy Siegle and Livia Firth who write:

The strength of this book is that every page turns the conventional view of the fashion landscape upside down, gives it a good shake and (charmingly) disposes of the offending idea in the nearest trash can. Instead, we are offered just about the most inspiring alternative models (of business, shopping, working- and even actual alternative models in the form of Summer Raynes Oakes) imaginable. And this is genuinely liberating.

056 1024x680 Book Review Naked Fashion by Saffia Minney

As soon as I opened the book, I knew that I was going to enjoy reading it. Every page was illustrated with colourful photographs. It was well laid out with chapters in a logical sequence which take you through the impacts and costs of fashion followed by the different parts of the solution including Fairtrade, the roles of stylists, the media, the designers, supply chain, buyers, trend forecasters and ethical brands. It is definitely the most comprehensive discussion on the subject that I have ever read and for me the jigsaw puzzle suddenly seemed to fit together giving me a much better understanding of what is need to make fashion more sustainable and ethical. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that wants to gain an in depth understanding of the ethical fashion  industry and what they as a consumer can do to help.

The book took the form of interviews with the different change makers, giving a huge amount of information and different opinions, not only on ethical fashion but also their role in the industry in general, from all sorts of different people who are working towards a more ethical fashion industry, even including muscians, make up artists and photographers.

It was great to see that Vintage Fashion was mentioned with an interview with Wayne Hemmingway being interviewed and also the subject of body image and treatment of models in the fashion industry.

Basically it made me realise just how we are controlled by media and advertising and how they sell us an ideal that is both damaging to our happiness, others and the planet.

0581 1024x680 Book Review Naked Fashion by Saffia Minney

Here are just a few quotes:

Wayne Hemmingway on the antedote to fast fashion

The solution is to treat fashion as fun and not as competition. Fashion should be there to make you feel good and get you noticed, but should never be about ‘keeping up with the Joneses’

0611 1024x680 Book Review Naked Fashion by Saffia Minney

Adam Harvey, an Account Manager at Masterpiece, one of Londons largest creative production agencies on the manipulation of images for magazine features or advertising.

Now with Macs and Photoshop, it’s all so easy- there is the possibility to completely re-sculpt a whole body. You can make a larger lady appear slim. Personally, I think its pulling the wool over people’s eyes. There should be boundaries.

Mihara Yasuhiro, a Japanese Designer on where the fashion industry is heading

Fashion has developed into a huge industry, with many inherent, serious problems which we have not addressed properly. In the same way that oil and other natural resources have caused conflict, fashion may also cause conflict. How can we really enjoy fashion under these circumstances? We urgently need to reinvent fashion.

Through out the book there are also some great resources with web addresses. There is also a useful list of ethical brands at the end.

You can buy Naked Fashion from People Tree.

What do you think? would you read it?
