Birthday Week

Apart from the fact that it marks me getting another year older, I really love birthdays. I don’t have much time to myself most of the time so on my birthday like to indulge myself. This year I have managed to spread it out over a whole week of doing pretty much exactly what I want. I had some lovely pressies including delicious smelling Lush goodies from my sister, a beautiful mirrored jewellery box and a necklace from my neighbours and a vintage book from my friend but mostly I got money which I  have used to treat myself to a few goodies (clothes of course!).

ramirez dress Birthday Week

On Monday, I spent a very wet day wandering around the shops and researching my Vintage and Second Hand Guide to Bath, I did also manage to squeeze in some shopping and got this beautiful scarf from the Black and White Shop for just £10. I also got this amazing printed dress from Monsoon and a Monsoon cardigan from the Oxfam Boutique. I can’t wait until the weather warms up so I can wear the dress perhaps with the scarf for a really printastic outfit!

086 Birthday Week

My actual birthday was really all about eating cake. I ordered up this beauty from Patisserie Valerie, it was delicious- sponge, cream, fruit and white chocolate.  I did manage to fit in 2 hours of excercise classes which hopefully went some way to offsetting some of those calories.

057 Birthday Week

On Thursday, I had a cup of tea and chat with the lovely Noorin Khamisani of Outsider, a fantastic label that is all about classic, wearable and beautiful clothes (that just happen to be ethical too) . I really love her latest collection which features some very lovely dresses, one of which she happens to be wearing in this photo.

0141 Birthday Week

It was yet another horrible and wet day so I resorted to wearing jeans (organic cotton from M&S) and boots (Dream in Green) with my new Antiform top that I got from Mr Style Eyes and the girls. I did give them a little help in deciding what to get me. Well actually I just bought it ,myself from Think Boutique. Antiform is another label which I really love and well worth checking out if you love unusual pieces. They use reclaimed fabrics and mix fashion forward shapes with heritage crafts.

I also got this People Tree top from the Zakee Shariff Collection.

0741 Birthday Week

And this dress by Frank and Faith (another amazing and very afforable brand) from Ethical Superstore which I wore out to dinner with my friends on Friday with leggings and necklace by People Tree, swapped denim jacket and shoes by Simple.

I have also ordered myself a few more goodies in the Ethical Superstore 20% off sale and some Melissa shoes (to keep my feet dry) which I will share once they arrive.

So that is it birthday week is over, back to reality, sensible, healthy eating and a complete shopping ban until at least the autumn, I definitely don’t need any new clothes now.

I hope you have had a lovely weekend, despite the rain!

With warmest wishes

Shorter Days of Winter

Edited by: Collette Osuna of Statements in Fashion

With shorter days of winter on their way, many of us will spend countless hours wrapped in a warm comfy robe, our hands nestled around a cup of hot cocoa, and stalking our favorite blogs and fashion sites. What could be better than online window shopping and thoughts of Santa’s arrival in our heads?

This weeks links showcase some awesome blog posts I’d love to read on a cold winter night.

Take some time to read about Eco friendly designers, tips for pursuing a career in fashion, jewelry tricks, DIY’s, fab bloggers over forty, and more.
Have a great weekend & stay warm!

DIY/ Refashioned Skull T Shirt

Yesterday I decided to have another go at a DIY/ refashioning project using a plain old black t shirt for this weeks IFB project on DIY. I have bleached quite a few clothes in the past but this time decided to try using bleach for a stencil effect. I chose a skull design.

003 1024x680 DIY/ Refashioned Skull T Shirt

For this project, you will need

An old t shirt in a dark colour
Some household bleach
rubber gloves
a plastic bag
a doiley
some greaseproof paper
a plastic tub
a sponge

I would also recommend protecting your clothes with an apron as any splashes of bleach will ruin them.

First draw the stencil design onto greaseproof paper and cut it out. It needs to be a fairly simple shape.

Then put the plastic bag inside the t shirt flat so it stops the bleach leaking through onto the back. Lay the stencil onto the t shirt. Tip some bleach into the plastic pot and (wear rubber gloves for this bit) use the sponge to gently dab it over the stencil. I then removed the stencil and used the doiley to stencil a lace effect around the rest of the front of the t shirt in random patches.

You will then need to wait until the bleach starts to work. Don’t leave it on too long. Once the design is clearly visible, you should rinse until all of the bleach is gone. It took me about 5 rinses.049 772x1024 DIY/ Refashioned Skull T Shirt

And here is  the finished result. As always you could adapt this DIY to make something different. Another interesting ideas would be to cut the doiley into a collar shape and use it to make a lace collar design with the bleach, you could also just bleach all over the t shirt (or any other piece of dark clothing) using the doilies or another type of stencil.

So what do you think? would you give this DIY a try?

With warmest wishes

What’s Old is New… Again.

Edited By: Jessica Thorpe

The saying, “what comes around, goes around” has been proven throughout the history of fashion.  Stylish peeps the world over have been stimulated by trends of decades passed time and time again. This weeks Links A La Mode is influenced by your interpretation of fashion fads and trends interpreted to suit our modern world.

The funky 70′s boho glam look is in full effect with flowing skirts, high waist lines and chunky platforms. Another trend making a loud avant garde blip on my radar is the classic ladylike look of the 50′s and 60′s. Women are embracing their curves and enhancing them with shape flattering silhouettes. Lastly, current fashion do’s that continue to inspire me are clever use of sheer, crochet, macrame and lace fabrics. And last but not least, retro accessories are back in a huge way; statement bangles, fanny packs and cat eye shades are loud on the fashion forefront.

IFB Crystals and Crumpets

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to get to go to to Crystal and Crumpets, a fashion bloggers event hosted by Independent Fashion Bloggers and Swarovski Crystallized. I have been wishing for a while that I could attend one of the IFB conferences but so far they have all been in the US. So when I heard that there was going to be an event in London, I had to be there. Despite the fact that I have been blogging for years, I have never managed to meet up with any other fashion bloggers as travel details, family or work have always made it impossible to get along. This time I could actually go so I was beyond excited!

I met with the lovely Kari of East London Style at Cafe Liberty before for a quick coffee and chat about families, fashion and blogging before moving onto the mad hatters tea party held at the Swarovski Crystal lounge.

I got the chance to meet so many amazing and stylish bloggers. Unfortunately there wasn’t time to speak to and get photos of everyone in their fabulous outfits and hats. It didn’t help that my camera has been intermittently playing up and decided to stopped working properly resulting in some dark and fuzzy pictures.0071 680x1024 IFB Crystals and Crumpets

I also met A Thrifty Mrs, Winnie of Diamond Canopy, Bangs and a Bun, Viviana of The Lean Times, The Fashion Recruit, Kristabel of I Want You To Know, The Online Stylist and Jackie of Made With Love.

We ate sandwiches, drank Prosecco and got to chat before sitting down for the panel discussion  which featured Susie Bubble of Style Bubble, Shini of Park and Cube, Nadia Sanwar of FrouFrou, YM Ousely of Signature9 and Mattias Senson of Bloglovin on how blogging can shape your career .

It was so amazing to see and hear from some of the bloggers that I have been following for a long time. In fact it was Susie who inspired me to start my blog. I have come away with the opinion that there is definitely no right or wrong way to be a fashion blogger, every one is doing things in a slightly (or very different) way and that is what makes each blog interesting. What does really matter though is that you do with because you love it and do it with passion. Some really interesting points came up including the amount of hard work it takes to build a successful blog and the different ways of making money through a blog (its not just about advertising).

008 1024x680 IFB Crystals and Crumpets

We were invited to get dressed up and wear a hat to the party, after all it was a Mad Hatters tea party. I didn’t need much persuasion to get dressed up and wear my bird fascinator that I got from The Libertarian at Vintage a Goodwood last year. I missed out on wearing it to a Burlesque event at Christmas because of the snow and have been waiting for a reason to wear it every since.I will write more about my outfit in another post as I don’t have any full length pictures yet due to camera issues.

The exciting thing was that I won the hat contest and got to pick out £200 of jewellery from Swarovski Crystalized. I was completely shell shocked as I never ever win anything and there was definitely some really fabulous hats there.

There was so much amazing jewellery in the show room, with designer collections from Chistopher Kane, Catherine Malandrino and Mark Fast and many other designers all crafted by hand. If you are looking for a really beautiful piece of jewellery, I would highly recommend checking out the shop which is opposite Liberty London or the website.

With so much sparkle in one room,  trying to pick something was an impossible task. I am indecisive at the best of times but after a few glasses of fizz and the excitement of meeting so many people, It took me ages to decide. An incredibly helpful and very patient sales assistant let me try on loads of different pieces before I finally came to a decision. I decided to go for something that I could wear to add a little sparkle to everyday outfits. I chose a double necklace by Camila Klein, gold dragonfly necklace and a pretty  bracelet. Will definitely be featuring these in some outfits very soon.
