You might be wondering why I have chosen to share with you an offer from a high street retailer when I call myself an ethical fashion blog. Well…
Monsoon (and sister brand Accessorize) are actually one of the most ethical ways to shop on the high street. Monsoon was originally set up as a company selling beautiful bohemian clothes from the Far East and in some ways they have stuck with that identity selling beautiful, unique and distinctive clothing that often feature handicrafts. The early collections were born from clothes made in Indian villages using vegetable dyes, hand-loomed cotton and block printing and they still work with suppliers and NGOs on projects to support craft communities.
They are members of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and also ensure that all suppliers abide by the Monsoon Accessorize Code of Conduct, which sets out minimum working conditions, pay and employment rights. In 1994, they set up the Monsoon Accessorize Trust, aimed at helping to improve the lives of disadvantaged women and children in Asia. Monsoon is also now in its 9th season of sponsoring the Estethica, the part of London Fashion Week dedicated to ethical fashion.
The L.O.V.E Collection at Monsoon features beautiful pieces of clothing and accesories made from orgnic fabrics with beautiful knits and embroidery. They also encourage recyling of their products through their Clothes for Life campaign which gives shoppers £10 off a new item when they return an old Monsoon item of clothing.
I have quite a few Monsoon items in my wardrobe and they are definitely the sort of clothes that you buy and then keep because they are timeless, well made and with a great fit. Monsoon continues to work towards more sustainable and ethical fashion by minimising energy usage, packaging, waste, upcycling waste fabrics and helping cotton farmers in India convert to organic methods and I think they are a fantastic brand to support not to mention their clothes are beautiful, affordable and very stylish.
What do you think of Monsoon?
With warmest wishes
